Traditional Bow Making - (March 29-April 1)

The Traditional Bow Building Workshop engages in the fine art of bow making; learning to carve and shape a single piece of wood into a beautiful and efficient hunting bow. While participating in this workshop you will experience the complete process of bow making from start to finish.  This is not a survival or quickie bow class.

You will learn how to properly select, harvest, and season bow wood. We then work through design & layout, shaping, tillering (bending), and finally shooting. Each participant will also learn how to make their own bow strings. In the end you will have completed a highly effective hunting tool that you will be able to enjoy for many years to follow.

Flint Knapping & Primitive Tool Apprenticeship

The Flint Knapping & Primitive Tool Apprenticeship is a 3 month hands-on experience where you will learn basic and advanced tool production. This apprenticeship will guide you through all the stages of reduction that are proven to be the most effective way to produce the sharpest edge possible on stones. You will also learn how to properly use antler, stone, and bone tools to reduce raw stone into usable tools. The stone will be your teacher and we will be your translator. You may find the lessons learned are beyond mere flake removal.

When: April 8, 11, 25 May 9, 13, 16 June 3, 6, 20 and July 1  (Wednesday 6:30 -8:30 pm Sunday 11am- 3pm)

  • What parts are edible
  • How to safely prepare it for eating
  • How to preserve it for long term storage

Foraging through the Seasons - A Wild Foods and Foraging Intensive

This is a hands-on experiential workshop series that empowers people to connect more deeply with plants. We will gather and process wild food, prepare herbal remedies, explore the ecology and learn how we can help habitats to thrive.

Students will walk away herbal extracts, native seeds, new recipes, and prepared foods to share with their loved ones.

Fire by Friction- The Bow Drill Method

Come and learn the ancient art of fire by friction and ignite the fire within you. This workshop is a tutorial in bow drill fire making and the importance of learning how to create fire.

While on this quest for fire you will;

  • Learn basic knife safety
  • Learn several carving techniques
  • Carve and construct your own bow drill kit
  • Learn the proper techniques for starting a friction fire
  • Learn how to identify the plants that contain the natural fibers and how to make rope with them
  • Learn proper material identification and selection,
  • Learn proper fire structures, and tinder collection.
  • Experience creating fire for the very first time just as your ancestors did.

Brain Tanning Workshop - How to Make Buckskin (May 12-13)

Our Hide Tanning Workshop walks you through all the steps it takes to turn animal skins into usable leather for clothing, bags and footwear. You will learn both wet scrape and dry scrape methods of tanning. This is a 100% hands-on experience where you will tan a deer hide. In the end each participant will go home with a beautiful, all natural, and soft piece of buckskin.

The Way of Hunt - Hunters Preperation Program

The Way of the Hunter is an in-depth experiential program focused on a mix of traditional and primitive hunting skills. This 3-month program is designed for those who want to become proficient in the art of hunting! Your time during this program will be spent working on these skills combined with our time in the field you will be ready for the early season hunt. By the end of this program you will have the skills and knowledge to adapt your skills to any environment.

Primitive Arrow Making (Oct 13-14)

This two day workshop teaches the complete process of primitive arrow making. From harvesting the arrow shaft to taking the shot, you will learn all the steps it takes to make the most important piece of the bow hunting equation.  You will learn different sources of arrow shafts, two methods of arrow straightening, spine testing, and how to fletch and haft your own arrow. You will walk away from this class with a deeper respect and understanding of the primitive arrow.  If time permits there will be a flint knapping demonstration on how to stone points are made.

Art from the Landscape - Pigments, Paints, and Crayons

Join Nick Neddo, artist, author, naturalist, primitive skills educator and craftsman, for a hands-on workshop on the ancient process of crafting natural materials into paint, paintbrushes and crayons. Learn all about pigments, binders, various kinds of paint and some rustic, yet elegant options for making paintbrushes.

Make crayons from pigments you process from the landscape. Students will also learn to improvise crayon molds from the plant world and use them in combination with beeswax and pigment to make wild crafted crayons of a variety of earth tones.

Join Nick Neddo, artist, author, naturalist, primitive skills educator and craftsman, for a hands-on workshop on the ancient process of crafting local materials into paint and paintbrushes. Learn all about pigments, binders, various kinds of paint and some rustic, yet elegant options for making paintbrushes. Participants will work with raw material from the ecosystem, including those they gather from the local landscape.
