Wild Apothecary: Tinctures and Salves

Description:

For millennia people have been using plants to alleviate the aches and pains of everyday life and to maintain their health. Two of the ways to deliver the healing powers of plants is through salves and tinctures. In this class we will teach you how to prepare your own salves and tinctures.

We will cover: How to understand basic tincture ratios
How to chop, weigh, cover, herbs for infusion in salves and tinctures.
How to strain and press the herbal infusions
How to make an infused oil using gentle heat and time saving methods
How to turn an infused oil into usable salve with the proper ratios of beeswax
How to work with activated charcoal safely and keep a drawing salve smooth and usable
How to store, date, and use topical medicine responsibly

Students will take home: One jar of tincture started in class, mullein or lemon balm, ready to steep at home
One small bottle of finished tincture from the class batch that we will strain and bottle together.
One tin of plantain salve
A handout with ratios, steps, labels, and a short safety guide.

 

This workshop is educational and does not prescribe nor provide medical treatment. We will review common precautions, especially for pregnancy, nursing, medication interactions, allergies, and sensitive skin. Participants are responsible for their own decisions and should consult a qualified medical professionals for personal medical guidance. We will use alcohol for tinctures.

There is a materials fee associated with this class: If you are bringing your own 4oz. Jar for your take home tincture and your own dropper bottle for the tincture we will strain and filter in class, The materials fee will be $10. If you can provide your own, there is no fee.
